There are lots of ways to wander through The Writing Woods.
Some programs are ready to go, while others can be adapted or created around the needs of your group. Creative writing, stories, poetry, art, music, conversation, and playful activities may all find their way in.
You don’t need to know exactly what kind of writing experience you’re looking for. Start with what you’d like your group to experience.

Creativity & Imagination
Play with possibilities and see where your imagination takes you.
Creative writing gives us permission to invent, experiment, and follow an idea somewhere unexpected. These experiences focus on the playful side of writing—creating characters and worlds, making surprising connections, telling stories, and discovering what can happen when we stop worrying about getting it “right.”
An experience might include:
Inventing an unusual character • building an imaginary world through the senses • creating a story from unexpected objects or words • experimenting with plot twists • writing from an unusual point of view • turning an ordinary object into something extraordinary

Connection & Belonging
Explore the stories, experiences, and little things that connect us.
Stories can help us recognize pieces of ourselves in other people—and notice the experiences that make each of us unique. These programs use writing and conversation to explore friendship, family, community, shared experiences, and what it means to feel that we belong.
An experience might include:
Writing about meaningful people or places • exploring friendship through characters • creating collaborative stories • responding to writing about belonging • discovering similarities and differences within a group • writing about the communities that shape us
